Stage 1: Discover

By measuring students’ psychological experiences of school and then mapping these to school administrative data, we identify the psychological barriers that some groups of student are facing, which can reduce their attendance. For example, we might find that a lower sense of belonging among students who meet pupil premium criteria appears to be substantially contributing to their lower attendance (see box).

We perform these analyses using responses from a brief student survey linked to anonymised information from the school’s administrative system. We use the analyses to provide the school with a detailed report comparing the psychological experiences of different groups of students, and examining whether these are associated with different levels of attainment, behaviour and attendance.
